Irene Magunga, known to others as Irene Onyango, was born and raised in Kenya. She was born with a musical talent and as such she started singing and making up tunes at a very early age. Born into a Catholic family, she spent most of her younger years learning the Catholic doctrines and singing in Catholic Church choirs. At the age of thirteen she was a member of one of the most powerful Catholic choirs in Mombasa, Kenya. When she got saved in 1992, Irene naturally ended up joining the praise and worship team in her church. She sung in uncountable crusades and church services. Often, she would meet artists who suggested that they do a collaboration and produce some music but none of those ever got to fruition.
In December of 2008, Pastor George Okudi of the "Wipolo" fame produced Irene's first album, "God is Good", bringing into conclusion a project that they had started the previous year but ended abandoning when she hit yet another bump. Pastor Okudi put a tremendous sacrifice on the project and is yet to see the full blessing that result from the seeds he sowed on it for God is continually blessing him for it. When you listen to the "God is Good" CD, you will find it hard to believe that Irene sung her back-up by herself! Of course you will also hear Pst Okudi shout "HUYO HUYO KAMATA!", too.
Irene is not only a musician, she is also a worshipper, and a teacher of the Word. She has taught several Sunday school classes and even generated Sunday School programs. She has also sat in church committees and has been an active member in church leadership. Many get surprised to see how easily she works with youth and the children. If you watched her, you would say that only God's anointing can bring such an ability. In 2009 she played a key role in helping the Delaware team to win the first position in ICA competition at a time when no one would have expected them to get any close to winning. She was reportedly heard saying that she, too, was surprised at what God had done!
When asked about her plans, She said, "another CD iko jikoni" meaning that she is working on her another album.
